Wheat Fields, Workboots & Wonder: Finding Rhythm in the Busy
This week has been a blend of preparation, presence, and progress—sometimes quiet, sometimes chaotic—but always moving toward something deeper.
Harvest hasn't started just yet, but it’s on the horizon. I’ve spent the week planning meals for Don’s boss’s harvest crew—15 to 17 hard-working men who will soon rely on a steady flow of food, cold drinks, and encouragement plus a few pranks! Lol! It’s the calm before the storm, where I start stocking ingredients, prepping recipes, and mentally bracing myself for the rhythm of long kitchen days, field deliveries, dusty truck rides, and late-night laughs under Kansas skies. Even though it is exhausting, it truly is one of my most favorite times of the year.
Our grandson has been soaking up every minute of this pre-harvest rhythm. He’s been working alongside his Papa—driving the Gator like a pro, fishing pole tucked in the back for spontaneous creek side breaks. He’s mowed, trimmed, sprayed, hauled, and still found time to sneak cuddles with the shop kitties. It’s been pure joy to watch him learn, contribute, and grow—right in the middle of everyday life. Such a fun couple weeks, we miss him so much! Counting the days till he returns!
And somewhere in all of this, I’m building my own rhythm, too. I'm not doing it perfectly (far from it), but I’m showing up: devotionals, planner time, water, movement, rest, a little fun, and staying focused on the work I feel called to do. I’m preparing for wheat harvest and for what feels like a personal harvest—becoming a certified Christian Life Coach, plus building Prairie Bloom Media, learning to lean into purpose, trusting God's timing even when the next step feels a little scary.
One verse has echoed in my heart all week:
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin...” — Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)
This season is a beginning in so many ways. It’s also a waiting, but I’m learning—through one of my favorite devotionals, 100 Days of Believing Bigger—that waiting is not passive. Waiting is an action word. It’s preparing, showing up, and stepping forward even before we feel fully ready.
Marshawn Evans Daniels wrote in her book:
"He can’t bless steps we never take, a dream we never deploy, or a mission we never start."
So this week, I’ve chosen to keep going, moving forward. To move in faith, even when progress feels slow or unseen. To trust that God rejoices—not just in our outcomes, but in our first faithful steps. Staying focused on what is on the horizon, because looking behind will only cause me to lose my balance and trip. What’s the old saying?
“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
My prayer is that this journey I am on will stretch me, strengthen me, ground me and help me become the best version of myself. Not striving for perfection, just progress.
As the week ended with Father’s Day, my heart overflowed with gratitude for the man who became “Dad” to my sons. His steady strength, quiet leadership, and unwavering love continue to shape the rhythm of our home and the foundation of our family.
Life right now is full—of lists, love, dust, joy, noise, and God’s gentle reminders that what we begin in faith, He finishes in grace.
Journaling Prompt:
Where is God asking you to begin—even if it feels small, scary, or unseen? What rhythm can you commit to this week that keeps you moving, trusting, and rooted in Him?
With Grace & Grit,
Lynda
